Mourning in the world of sports after one of the world’s most famous darts players died suddenly. Messages of condolence continue to pour in on social media.
Chinese player Momo Zhou, who won a BDO major tournament in her career, died suddenly on Wednesday at the age of 31, according to Mirror.co.uk . Her sponsors, Target Darts, announced the news on Twitter on Thursday.
Expert Paul Nicholson described Momo Zhou’s death as “utterly unbelievable”.
Tributes have been poured in for the Chinese player who, in 2018, became the second woman to play in the World Cup of Darts.
“We are overwhelmed with sadness to announce the passing of Momo Zhou (31), a beloved member of the #TeamTarget family based in China,” officials of the professional darts team tweeted.
“Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time,” national federation officials said in Beijing.
Who was Momo Zhou and how did she die?
Momo Zhou is best known for her appearance at the World Cup of Darts, representing China in 2018.
She became the second athlete in the world to participate in this international event after Anastasia Dobromyslova represented Russia in 2010.

Former English professional player Nicholson reacted to the news of Zhou’s unexplained death: “The news about Zhou Momo is absolutely unbelievable,” he tweeted. “So tragic at just 31 years old.”
The causes of the Chinese athlete’s death are not yet known.
