The lively atmosphere has been shadowed by certain poignant realities of the city that need to be discussed openly to get rid of the mental issues which resulted in several cases of suicides. The prevailing instances of deaths due to suicide need the collaborative efforts of the community to come forward and discuss these delicate issues.
Ghim Moh recent suicide case
The recent tragedy unfolded on 3 December 2023 at block 29 Ghim Moh Link, a public housing block. The police reached the scene at around 11:15 a.m. when a passerby or neighbour informed the police about the situation. The police arrived at the location and found the lifeless bodies of a 34-year-old woman and her three-week-old infant at the base of the housing board block in Ghim Moh.
The authorities are diligently working to identify the cause and circumstances of the death. Law enforcement authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause; however, there is no sign or evidence of foul play identified by the authorities. In this tragedy, the community must unite and stay connected to know each other’s well-being and look for the mental well-being of their neighbourhood.
Another poignant incident
There was also a distressing case that occurred before 3 December 2023 in Ghim Moh. The incident happened on 30 August 2022, in which an elderly 83-year-old woman was found in her JBD flat. It was reported that the woman’s dead body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, which had greatly distressed the community.
The court proceedings after her death revealed the harsh reality that her children had neglected her and had not paid their visits to her since 2019, due to which she lived alone in her flat.
This tragic incident resulted in neglected acts by the neighbourhood, which the community can prevent to overcome the tragedy of isolation. It is important to stay connected and show care to the elderly residents and ensure they receive the care, attention and assistance they need in that phase of their lives.
These tragic incidents provide a lesson to take responsibility to overcome suicidal issues and stay updated and connected with the neighbourhood, especially to those that are at risk and elderly residents, and show strength and support to each other in the difficult phases of life.
