Who Was Franco Harris?

The former running back won four Super Bowls with Pittsburgh and is the author of one of the greatest plays in NFL history.

Franco Harris, former running back, Pittsburgh Steelers idol, and Hall of Famer, passed away early this Wednesday (21), aged 72. The information was disclosed by the son of Harris, Dok, to the Associated Press.

The death comes two days before the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception,” as one of the most iconic plays in NFL history became known. On December 23, 1972, in a match against the Oakland Raiders (today, Las Vegas Raiders), in the Divisional Round, the runner made a completely unexpected reception, after a pass from quarterback Terry Bradshaw to John Fuqua was neutralized by the defense and almost fell incomplete.

Harris confirmed the reception and ran for the touchdown, which would seal the victory by 13 to 7 with a few seconds left in the game. Pittsburgh would eventually be defeated in the American Conference Finals by the invincible Miami Dolphins.

And the match this Saturday (24), for week 16 of the league, would be precisely between the Steelers and Raiders. Pittsburgh had already scheduled a halftime ceremony honoring the date. The confrontation will take place at 22:15 (Brasília time), at Acrisure Stadium.

Harris is a Steelers idol. In all, he won four Super Bowls for the franchise (IX, X, XIII, and XIV), and was elected nine times to the Pro Bowl (1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1980) and seven times to the selection All-Pro (1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979), won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1972 and Walter Payton Man of the Year in 1976, and was included in the 1970s All-Decade Team of the NFL. He also has a one-season spell, the last in his career, in 1984 with the Seattle Seahawks.

The cause of death has not been confirmed.
