According to the reports, Edith’s health deteriorated in late 2023, and on Monday morning, she suddenly collapsed and unexpectedly passed away at her home in Philadelphia. The news of her death was announced by Jefferson’s Chief Executive Officer and Patricia D. Wellenbach, Dr. Joseph G. Cacchione, in which he admired the excellent services Edith gave in health disparities.
Who was Edith Mitchell?
Edith Mitchell was known for her exceptional services as a clinical medicine and medical oncology professor at Thomas Jefferson University. She was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, in 1948. She was raised in racial segregation but tackled these obstacles and became a doctor. Edith went to Tennessee State University, where she got her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.
Edith’s military career started when she joined the United States Air Force, including an internship and internal medicine residency at Meharry Medical College. Later, she worked as a hematologist at Andrews Air Force Base.
Edith worked as Missouri Surgeon General, through which she started a women’s health program in the military and wrote a Guideline for the effective transport of wounded or sick Soldiers. In 2001, Edith got promoted and earned the title of First African-American women Brigadier General in the Missouri Air National Guard. After serving for three decades, she retired in 2005.
Edith did not confine her services to military pursuits. She extended to the academic realm and gave distinguished services. She served in the position of Faculty of Medicine and Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University. She also did outstanding work for the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Center, where she was Associate Director of diversity programs.
Edith’s work and service were greatly appreciated by everyone, achieving her various awards, including the American Cancer Society Cancer Control Award and The National Medical Association Council for her services on the concerns of the women physician Pfizer Research award. Her dedication and unwavering commitment to providing excellence in medicine services left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her and became a source of inspiration to all those who aspire to offer their services for the betterment of society.
Memorial service
A memorial service has been scheduled for the celebration of her life and exceptional services and achievements on January 22, 2024, at the First Baptist Church of Brownsville. The family is urging that in replacement of flowers, it is essential to donate to the Edith P. Mitchell Cancer Research Fund at Thomas Jefferson University to continue Edith’s legacy of advancing cancer research.
