This is the text of a tweet with which Wieden+Kennedy reported last Saturday on the death of one of its founders, Dan Wieden, who was CEO and Creative Director General of the agency. As you may remember, the other promoter of the prestigious agency, David Kennedy, passed away just a year ago —on October 10, 2021—.

The cause of death was not immediately clear. According to an obituary provided to Insider, Wieden died “peacefully with his wife by his side” at his home in Portland.

Dan Wieden and David Kennedy worked together at McCann-Erickson, the agency that created what is today the largest independent agency on the planet. Its origins go back to 1982 when W+K started its activity in an office located in a basement where there was not even a telephone connection. Although they had to go to a nearby pay phone to make a call, a then-little-known brand, Nike, helped launch their new company. The sports firm was its founding client and thanks to its rapid growth, the agency’s reputation increased until it became one of the most demanded in the United States.

“We are heartbroken,” Wieden+Kennedy shares in a statement. “But even more, we are invaded by gratitude and love. Thank you, Dan, for throwing the doors wide open for people to realize their full potential. Thank you for your perseverance, your courage, your faith and your permanent love. Thank you for making this beautiful creative life possible. We’ll miss you very much”.

Wieden was born in Oregon in 1945. He graduated in Journalism and Communications from the University of Oregon in 1967, and before beginning his advertising career, he worked for several years in the public relations sector although his father owned one of Portland’s leading advertising agencies, Gerber Advertising. His break into the advertising industry was as a freelancer, at which time he discovered that he had a gift for this business.

A gift that has undoubtedly received well-deserved recognition. Wieden has won numerous awards throughout her long career, including the Clio Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, Cannes Lions Lion of St. Mark, and her induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame.
