The 33-year-old Irishman Craig Breen was scheduled to make his second WRC start of the season at the Rally Croatia next week, but he passed away on Thursday due to an accident during pre-event testing in Croatia.
Breen perished in a collision on April 13, 2023. At 12:40 p.m, Breen suffered severe injuries after his car’s front left side collided with an obstruction on the road between Stari Golubovec and Lobor at that time. James Fulton, Breen’s co-driver, was unharmed.
In a statement, Hyundai Motorsport expressed its deepest sympathies to Craig’s family, friends, and many supporters.
“Hyundai Motorsport is deeply saddened to confirm that driver Craig Breen today lost his life following an accident during the pre-event test for Croatia Rally.
Co-driver James Fulton was unharmed in the incident just after midday local time.
Hyundai Motorsport sends its sincerest condolences to Craig’s family, friends, and fans.
Hyundai Motorsport will make no further comment at this time.”
Breen’s passing has caused rally fans from all over the world to post memorials on social media.

In the most recent World Rally Championship (WRC) season, Irish rally driver Breen participated sporadically for the Hyundai squad. His class victories at the Monte Carlo Rally, Wales Rally GB, Rally France, and Rally of Spain helped him win the 2012 Super 2000 WRC.
Breen won his maiden competition at the 2011 Rallye Deutschland and completed the championship by winning the Wales Rally GB. In 2011, Breen won the WRC Academy Cup.
