Tribute:

A Long tribute shared by Connor Nelson to his beloved Colter Hale states:

This one hurts so bad.

Colter Hale, you were my little brother that I never had. We shared so many ups and so many downs. We had a special bond growing up together, competing, and traveling the country. Eventually, I became his ski coach; I still considered Colter a friend rather than an athlete I was in charge of. Not only was Colter one of the most talented athletes on the mountain, but he was also a leader. I looked to him often to help guide the team as I knew they would listen to him rather than me, the nagging coach. We respected each other while finding time to have fun and stay positive. As we grew out of skiing and into our professional careers, we stayed close; he visited me in Chicago, where of course, on the one night I went out in years, we witnessed a 100-person brawl at Wrigley Field. Sometimes I was baffled at the shenanigans Colt, and I would get into. On my most recent occasion with Colter, he got his sled stuck way back in the backcountry. He called me and Parks Thomson to help. We spent the whole next day trying to get his sled out. Eventually, at 5 pm, we were off the mountain. It was the last time I got to tell him how much he meant to me.

I am so mad I don’t get to call you anymore or send you goofy texts. I’m mad I don’t get to ski pow while hooting and hollering with you. I am angry I don’t get to hug you one last time. I am mad. I can’t tell you how much you meant to me.

I hope you are in a better place. Say hello to Spencer and all the ones who went before you.

Please, friends, reach out to me if you’re struggling. I’m here to listen and help to the best ability.

Rest Easy Colter. ❤️
