Howard Bruce Sutter, an American pitcher who played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1976 and 1988, was born on January 8, 1953, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Before being signed by the Chicago Cubs as an undrafted free agent in 1971, Sutter briefly attended Old Dominion University. While playing for the Chicago Cubs for five years, the St. Louis Cardinals for four, and the Atlanta Braves for three, he was the closer for each team.

He was one of the game’s most effective relievers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, making outstanding use of the split-finger fastball. The 1982 World Series champion and six-time All-Star Sutter retired with 300 saves, third-most in MLB history, and a 2.83 career earned run average.

Sutter, who received the NL Cy Young Award in 1979, was the best pitcher in the National League (NL). Additionally, he received four NL Rolaids Relief Man Awards. He started to hold the NL lead in saves as the only pitcher (1979–1982, 1984).

Personal Life:

Sutter, his wife, and their three sons remained in Atlanta after he retired. His son Chad, a catcher for Tulane University, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 23rd round of the amateur edition in 1999. (711th overall). Prior to becoming a coach for the Tulane baseball team, Chad played one season of minor league baseball.
