Bill Turnbull, an American journalist, TV host, and broadcaster, died at age 66. He was the BBC breakfast host for 15 years.
The journalist and presenter lost his battle with prostate cancer on Wednesday, “challenging and committedly,” at home in Suffolk, supported by his family, as per his family.
Turnbull revealed his battle with the cancer in 2018 after being diagnosed the previous year.
On January 25, 1956, William Robert Jolyon Turnbull was born in Guildford, Surrey. He received his education at Eton College before enrolling at the University of Edinburgh, where he served as the paper’s editor. At the local Scottish broadcaster Radio Clyde, Turnbull’s career started in 1978.
In 1986, Turnbull began working for the BBC as a reporter for the Today program. He then began working as a reporter for Breakfast Time in 1988. In 1990, he started working as a correspondent for BBC News.
Turnbull married Sarah McCombie in the London Borough of Hackney in March 1988. Three children were born to the couple: a daughter Flora and two sons, Henry and Will.
In 1997, Turnbull moved back to the UK and started working for BBC News 24 alongside Valerie Sanderson. He has frequently served as a host on Radio 5 Live, most notably serving as Weekend Breakfast’s host for a time.
He began co-hosting BBC Breakfast with Sian Williams in 2001, and they did so for 11 years before the show was moved from London to Salford as part of BBC’s ambitions to expand production outside of the city. Until 2014, when Reid left the program to work for ITV, he co-anchored the show with Susanna Reid.
Turnbull, well-liked by fans, hosted the program until 2016 while co-presenting with several journalists, including Kate Silverton, Natasha Kaplinsky, and Louise Minchin. Turnbull also hosted the quiz show Think Tank and Songs of Praise outside of BBC Breakfast.
