Former wrestler faced Muhammad Ali in 1976 and was part of the Pride and Jungle Fight organization

Former fighter and politician Muhammad Hussain Inoki, popularly known as Antonio Inoki, passed away on the night of this Friday, Saturday morning in Japan, at the age of 79. According to the website “Yahoo Japan”, Inoki died at home; he had been dealing with health problems in recent years.

Antonio Inoki was one of the forerunners of Vale-Tudo and MMA on a global stage. The Japanese wrestler, who emigrated to Brazil at age 14 and competed in track and field there, returned to Japan at age 17 and became one of the international stars of professional wrestling. From there, he also fought against fighters from other martial arts, such as karate.

His most famous fight was against boxing legend Muhammad Ali in 1976, in a match that drew the eyes of fight fans around the world. However, with very complicated rules to prevent one of the two from taking advantage, the combat was frustrating, with few connected blows, and ended in a draw.

Later, already retired from fighting, Inoki would become a supporter of MMA, either in Japan, where he was involved in Pride and promoted the annual Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye events or in Brazil, where he was Wallid Ismail’s partner in the launch of Jungle Fight. Antonio Inoki was also a politician, twice elected to the House of Councilors of Japan, equivalent to the Brazilian Senate.
