Angela Laverne Brown, better known by her stage name Angie Stone, was an American singer-songwriter, actress, and record producer.

At the First Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone started her singing career under the guidance of the Reverend Blakely N. Scott. As a member of a gospel quartet, her father took Stone to see the Gospel Keynotes and the Singing Angels play.

With Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisolm, Stone co-founded the female hip-hop group The Sequence at 16 in the late 1970s.

Early in the 1990s, she joined the R&B group Vertical Hold. Stone’s first solo album Black Diamond (1999), which was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, featured the single “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” that was made available.

Stone has been nominated for three Grammys and has won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. She received recognition as a Soul Music Icon at the 2021 Black Music Honours.
