The talented casting director Amanda Mackey, who won awards for her work on classic movies like “A League of Their Own” and “Smokin’ Aces,” has passed away. She was 70. Daughters Nicola and Emma are her only survivors.
At Calvary Hospital in Brooklyn, Mackey passed away on August 27 from myelodysplastic syndrome, a kind of blood cancer, according to her longtime friend and business partner Cathy Sandrich Gelfond.
“We are devastated to learn of Amanda Mackey’s passing as a casting director. She was a role model for many people in our industry, and everyone at CSA expresses their sympathies to her family and friends, according to a statement from the Casting Society.
Amanda Mackey, born on September 22, 1951, and was reared in New York City, has always been inspired by acting, theatre, and movies. She has been casting in concert with Cathy Sandrich Gelfond since the early 1990s. She and Sandrich Gelfond established the Mackey Sandrich Casting Company. In 1996, Mackey relocated back to Manhattan, and Mackey Sandrich Casting became the first independent company to operate on both ends.
Working with Wendy Weidman, who started as a casting assistant and is now a casting director in her own right, Johnson and Gelfond have been doing so since the early 2000s.
Mackey won Artios Awards for both movies. “Bad Moms,” “United 93,” “Ronin,” and “The Hunt for Red October” are a few of her other acting roles by the Casting Society.
She and her casting partner Cathy Sandrich Gelfond were nominated for an Emmy in 2014 for Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special for “The Normal Heart.” Johnson is thought to be worth $ 14 million.
