This October 3, the Mexican poet David Huerta passed away. Below we will tell you more about his life and his work, one of the most outstanding in the field of the Spanish language.

He addressed that experience in the poem “Nueve años después”, which appeared in the book Version  (1978):

That book, along with  November Notebook (1976), would confirm him as one of the most outstanding poets of his generation. A decade later he published in the ERA publishing house what is considered to be his most important book, Incurable.

This unitary poem, close to 400 pages, was recognized as a summit of Mexican poetry of the second half of the 20th century. Books like  The music of what happens  (1997), The blue in the flame  (2002) and  The white street  (2006) would follow.

He developed a prolific career as a translator and editor. He was also an important teacher at the UNAM Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and at the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UACM). Likewise, he served as a tutor in the Fonca Young Creators program and in the Under the Volcano writers’ school .

In 2005 he won the Xavier Villaurrutia award; in 2015, the National Prize for Sciences and Arts; and in 2019 the FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages. Critics recognized him as one of the most important poets of the Spanish language.

Some of his books, such as  Incurable and Version,  are considered classics of Mexican literature. From the latter, we extract a fragment of the poem “La máquina autobiográfica”:
