Syl Johnson Died: What Was His Cause Of Death?
American singer Sylvester Johnson, better known as Syl Johnson, died Sunday at the age of 85. The news was confirmed by Rolling Stone magazine, which received a statement from Syl’s family. The cause of death was not disclosed.
One of the biggest names in blues and soul, Syl is considered “the most sampled artist of all time”. Only his song Different Strokes, for example, has been sampled in songs by artists such as Public Enemy, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Wu-Tang Clan, and many others.
Syl’s death comes just a few days after the death of his older brother, fellow musician Jimmy Johnson, who died at the age of 93. “It is with extreme sadness that our family announces the passing of Soul and Blues Hall of Fame legend Syl Johnson, born Sylvester Thompson in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend, and artist, he lived his life as a singer, musician, and entrepreneur who loved black music,” the statement read.
Famous for hits like Come On Sock It to Me and Is It Because I’m Black, Syl’s biggest hit came in 1975: the cover Take Me to the River. But even as the “sample king” he rarely received royalties for the use of his music, which includes recent lawsuits against Cypress Hill, Kanye West, and Jay-Z.
The news was released by the family, but the cause of death was not revealed.
