Ronnie Spector Died

The singer Ronnie Spector, leader of the musical group The Ronettes, has died at the age of 78 as a result of cancer at her home in Connecticut (USA). She became famous in the 60s with songs like ‘Be my baby’, by her then-husband Phil Spector, which had overwhelming success and had numerous versions.

Her family has explained in a statement on the artist’s website that she has died surrounded by her family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.

“Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eyes, a brave attitude, a wicked sense of humor, and a smile on her face. She was full of love and gratitude,” the family glossed. “Her happy sound, playful nature, and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard, or saw her,” they added.

Ronnie, born Veronica Yvette Bennett in New York, was the daughter of an African-American mother and an Irish father. She formed The Ronnettes with her sister Estelle Bennett and her cousin Nedra Talley.

With Spector she would have some of her biggest hits, such as ‘Baby, I Love You’, ‘Born to Be Together’, and ‘Is This What I Get for Loving You?’.

The group separated in 1967, at the end of a concert tour of Europe, but Ronnie Spector reunited it again in the 70s with other members. She continued her solo career and in 2018 gave a concert in Barcelona.

Her latest projects included filming her life, for which she had selected actress and singer Zendaya as her on-screen alter ego.
