Actor Pete Smith died this Saturday in his native New Zealand at the age of 63, as confirmed by one of his six children in statements to Stuff magazine. Poumau Papali’i-Smith explained that his father had been ill for a long time and that the dialysis treatment he had undergone for the last six years had taken its toll, although the cause of his death was an infection that he contracted recently.

Pete made his big-screen debut in the 1985 New Zealand sci-fi film The Quiet Earth, for which he won a GOFTA, and went on to act in many other productions including The Flight of the Albatross, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, and The Boys. In 2003 he had the opportunity to participate in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as an orc.

He also often worked on television, and in 2006 he won an Air New Zealand Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the drama series The Market. Behind the scenes, he helped create documentaries based on his love of gardening and Maori culture, such as ‘Maramataka’.

“He was always out in the community making documentaries with the local talent here with his gardening show,” said his son, who hopes he will be remembered as follows: “He was just a countryman, putting everyone else himself.”
