On September 29, 2022, a Thursday morning, the renowned musician Mark Hitt died tragically. On September 30, 2022, the news of his passing was announced on social media, and many people expressed their sorrow and paid honor to the icon. As cancer cells began to grow within the pancreas, Mark passed away following a prolonged and courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.
Several well-known musicians have responded to Mark Hitt’s tragic passing. Mark Hitt was someone I admired from afar in the early days of Rat Race Choir, the gold standard for cover bands in our area, Ted McCallion said in response to his passing. Tim Curtin made it possible for me to play with him, which was a memorable experience.
At age 7, Mark began playing the violin. At age 11, he turned to the guitar. Mark practices progressive, unconventional guitar improvisation. He distinguishes himself from other well-known guitarists by emphasizing an original, “out of the box” phrasing method while retaining an intense blues basis.
Wherever I’m on the fretboard, my origins are still in the blues; Mark sings while mixing rough, bubbling rock riffs with violin-like phrases.

His involvement with the Rat Race Choir, where he once played the guitar, made him best known. Mr. Luongo and Mr. Chmela created the Rat Race Choir in 1968 while still in school. While a member of the Rat Race Choir, Mark Hitt collaborated with Chris Murphy, Peppy Ficaretta, and Chris Peck. This band was located in Westchester, and on July 18, 1968, it gave its first notable concert in White Plains at the YWCA.
