7 dead after plane crash in Tennessee lake
A small jet with seven people on board crashed into a lake in Tennessee with no survivors, authorities said.
The Cessna C501 landed on Percy Priest Lake near Smyrna on Saturday after it took off from a nearby airport at 11 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
Rutherford County relief teams conducted search operations at the crash site, Rutherford County Fire Department Rescue Captain Joshua Sanders said at a news conference.
He noted that there were no survivors. “We went from rescue actions to recovery actions … We are no longer looking for surviving victims at this time,” Sanders stated.
County authorities identified the seven dead in a statement: Brandon Hannah, Gwen S. Lara, William J. Lara, David L. Martin, Jennifer J. Martin, Jessica Walters, and Jonathan Walters, all from Brentwood, Tennessee. Their names were released after their families were notified.
A diet guru among the victims
Tennessee media indicates that the person identified as Gwen Shamblin Lara who was traveling on the ship was a diet guru .
She and her husband William Lara are founders of Remnant Fellowship Church and the woman is the author of a diet book called The Weigh Down Workshop.
The couple lived in the Brentwood area of Tennessee and had registered the plane in the name of their company. Their daughter, Elizabeth Hannah, sent a message to church members saying that her mother and father were on the ship. All the passengers on the plane had ties to the church.
Sanders said the ship appeared to have completely crashed into the lake and parts were found on the surface. The aircraft was heading from the Smyrna Rutherford County Airport to the Palm Beach, Florida International Airport.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration sent investigators to the crash site.
Smyrna is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Nashville. Lake Persy Priest is a reservoir created by the J. Persy Priest Dam. The lake is often a destination for boats and fishing.
