The actor was born in 1949 in Cape Town, South Africa. His grandparents came from Lithuania, from where they had been displaced. For over 40 years, Sher has performed in theaters and became famous for his many outstanding performances by Shakespearean heroes. In 1985, he won the Olivier Award for the role of Richard III on Crutches directed by Bill Alexander.
He also frequently worked with his life partner, who cast him as Macbeth, Othello, Falstaff, and King Lear. In 2000, he was awarded a knighthood for his services to British theater.
“We are deeply saddened by this news, and our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Greg and Antony’s family and friends during this difficult time. Antony has a long relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company and has become enormously famous on stage and on screens,” Catherine wrote in a statement Mallyon, the new theater director.
A wider audience could admire Antony Sher, among others in the films “Shakespeare in Love”, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, “Macbeth” and “Her Majesty Mrs. Brown”.
