Before becoming a DJ

Before becoming a famous DJ, Joel Zimmerman was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Canada, the son of Rodney Thomas Zimmerman, a General Motors worker, and Nancy Zimmerman, a visual artist. His first introduction to music was thanks to a keyboard that he obtained when he was still a teenager. However, it would not be the profession to which he would dedicate his life.

Joel was originally dedicated to systems engineering, specifically software design, and programming. He considered himself a great fan of video games, and thanks to this last hobby, the pseudonym with which we know him today was born: all because on one occasion, he literally got a dead mouse on his keyboard when he was changing the graphics card.

After the incident, netizens began to recognize him as ” the dead mouse guy .” Then he saw it as a good username: Deadmouse. Unfortunately, it exceeded the length limit. So he came up with a brilliant idea to shorten it; he used the word maus (‘mouse ‘ in German), and a 5  for an s, because they used to be replaced in alphanumeric encoding, and why not, it sounded great.

The end result was deadmau5, and it began to become popular on the Internet with this nickname. The mouse-shaped mask was later devised when he was learning to use a 3D design program.

Later, he got a job at a local radio station, and took that opportunity to publicize some mixes he had been working on, and thus, the deadmau5 tracks began to sound and be known.

Deadmau5 becomes one of the most successful DJs

Independently, Joel launched his first production in 2005, where he mixed sounds IDM, house, downtempo, noise pop, big beat, among others. Among his best-known songs is Get Scraped, which was the promotional single for the album of the same name.

Surprisingly, by 2006, the DJ had already released three albums: Project 56, deadmau5 circa 1998-2002,  and  A little oblique. In this way, and working hard, deadmau5 created his own record label Mau5trap Recordings the following year; a company that grew rapidly, as well as his development as a producer and performer.

In 2008, he released the album Random Album Title,  with which he found his progressive style that, for many, is considered his best work . This album featured the collaboration of producer Kaskade on the song I Remember.

On September 6 of the same year, the song  Move For Me, which was also made in collaboration with Kaskade, reached the first position in the list “Dance / Mix Show Airplay”, of Billboard magazine, in the United States. Since then, he has managed to top it two more times: I Remember and Ghosts n ‘Stuff.

Also, thanks to the great success obtained with his latest album, he managed to sell more than 30 thousand copies; This allowed him to establish himself as one of the best DJs, in addition to focusing his style on the progressive house genre. That year, he also managed to rank 11th in DJ Mag magazine’s “Top 100 DJs .”

He later released his second album For Lack Of A Better Name, on the Ultra Records label. The album surpassed 5 million views on his MySpace page, earning the artist a Grammy nomination the following year. In addition, it was the winner of the JUNO Award for dance recording of the year.

His perseverance and dedication led that, that same year, deadmau5 was named by MTV as “the DJ of the MTV Video Music Awards.” On that stage, he performed in the company of Jason Derulo and Travie McCoy. Similarly, he won three International Dance Music awards, including the best artist category and, as if that were not enough, he released his fifth album, 4 × 4 = 12.

For 2011, the DJ was positioned at the top of the major charts worldwide with Sofi Needs A Ladder, Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff and I Remember. A year later, he released his sixth album, Album Title Goes Here, on which he included the singles Maths and  The Veldt, as well as a collaboration with artists such as Chris James and Gerard Way, lead singer of the famous band My Chemical Romance.

On March 3, 2017, as a tribute to his career, the DJ posted Stuff I Used To Do; a compilation of all his work from 1998 to 2007. Twenty-two days later, deadmau5 began his international tour to promote the album W: / 2016Album, which was released the previous year.

Deadmau5 has been characterized by his perseverance and professionalism throughout his career, and that is why, after returning from the tour, his next album entitled, Mau5ville level, emerged: 1. In this production artists such as Rob Swire participated, who collaborated on the Monophobia theme.
