Soccer Player Rafael Albrecht Dies At 79.

León, Gto.- José Rafael Albrecht was a fine player, an insurmountable central defender, and gifted with a refined technique of hitting the ball. He added feats in his campaigns with the León Club between 1970 and 1974 and is considered another of the great icons of the team.

his Wednesday, the two-time World Cup ( Chile 1962 and England 1966 ) died a victim of covid in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He had been in intensive care for a week and finally lost the battle, at 79 years old.

When Albrecht arrived at León, he was preceded by that worldwide fame and had been one of the great figures of Argentine soccer of the 1960s, where he shone with San Lorenzo de Almagro (a team of which Pope Francis is a fan ). 

In the defense of the Esmeraldas, he had as a companion and pupil Héctor ” Cuirio ” Santoyo, who died just a few days ago. And he also teamed up with other Argentine figures such as Juan José Valiente and Jorge Davino, with whom he was hired at the request of coach Antonio Carbajal; shortly after, another countryman of his would arrive: Roberto Salomone.

One memorable match was when Albrecht scored four goals against Atlético Español goalkeeper Raúl Orvañanos at the Azteca Stadium on November 7, 1971.

In the 74-75 campaign he was transferred to the Atlas, where he retired.

The name of José Rafael Albrecht is indelibly inscribed in the history of Club León and in the hearts of Verdiblancos fans.
