Iris Rezende Dies At The Age Of 87

The politician had been hospitalized for more than three months in the city of São Paulo after suffering a cerebrovascular accident (CVA)

The former governor of Goiás and former mayor of Goiânia, Iris Rezende, at the age of 87 died at dawn this Tuesday. He had been hospitalized for more than three months in the city of São Paulo after suffering a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in August.

On August 31, he was transferred to Hospital Vila Nova Star, in São Paulo. Last Saturday (6), he was intubated to treat pneumonia. Since then, his condition has deteriorated. Iris died around 12:30 am this Tuesday.

Confirmation of the death came after the politician’s advisor posted his profile on social media.

“With great regret, we inform you of the death of the former mayor and former governor of Goiás, Iris Rezende Machado, aged 87, at Hospital Vila Nova Star, in São Paulo. He was being treated for a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) since the day 08/06/2021. Last Saturday (6) he was intubated to treat a severe infection”.

Iris Rezende ended his long political career in 2020, which began in 1959, when he was elected councilor. In more than 60 years in public life, he was four times mayor of Goiânia and still elected state governor for two terms, from 1983 to 1986 and from 1991 to 1994.

The body of the politician will be veiled this Tuesday (9) at the Palácio das Esmeraldas and the burial is scheduled for 17:00, at the Santana cemetery, in Goiânia.
