Honduran Soccer Player Porfirio Armando Betancourt Died

He had been hospitalized for several weeks in a hospital in the northern city of San Pedo Sula.

Former Honduran soccer player Porfirio Armando Betancourt, who participated in the Spain-82 World Cup with his team, died this Wednesday after several days of being hospitalized because of covid-19, reported the player’s former teammates.

“Friends, my heart is torn, my brother Mano, Porfirio Betancourt, has left, I do not know how he could lose this battle if he was the strongest,” Hector “Pecho de Águila” tweeted Zelaya, the former defender of that team from Honduras and Scorer of the first goal in the 1-1 draw against Spain.

“It has been very hard for us to lose a friend, a brother,” the captain of that team, Jaime Villegas, told local media.

The “Cannon”, as the footballer was known, had been hospitalized for several weeks in a hospital in the northern city of San Pedo Sula, after having contracted the new coronavirus and local media had previously reported his delicate condition.

There are already six deceased ex-footballers of that team, the first from Honduras to play a World Cup, plus its coach, José de Paz Herrera “Chelato” Uclés.

Luis Cruz, Domingo Droumont, Javier Toledo, Celso Guity, Roberto Bailey and Roberto el “Macho” Figueroa, are the players of that team who lost their lives in recent years.
