Vince Dooley Death

Vince Dooley, a successful football coach for Georgia for a quarter-century who carried himself like a professor, passed away on Friday. He was 90. The school reported that Dooley passed away quietly at his Athens home in front of his wife, Barbara, and their four children. His cause of death has not yet been made public.

Dooley declared himself well improved and prepared to attend his regular book-signing event at the campus bookstore before an Oct. 15 game against Vanderbilt. Dooley was admitted to the hospital earlier this month for a minor case of COVID-19.

In 1963, Vince Dooley moved to Athens to take over the failing University of Georgia football program. He established himself in Athens over nearly 60 years as the athletic director, head coach of a team that won a national championship, and then most famous retiree.

From 1964 through 1988, Dooley led the Bulldogs to a 201-77-10 career record. He is fourth among all SEC coaches in terms of victories, after Bear Bryant, Steve Spurrier, and Nick Saban. Coach Vince Dooley of the Georgia football team created a dominant program that won 201 games, one national championship, and six SEC championships.

Dooley continued serving as the school’s athletic director when he stopped coaching, a position he maintained from 1979 to 2004. He created a successful program in various men’s and women’s sports.
