Tom Kurvers Died

The University of Minnesota-Duluth announced Monday that longtime NHL defender and executive officer Tom Kurvers has passed away at the age of 58.

Kufus is a native of Minneapolis and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019.

For the past three seasons, he has been the assistant general manager of his hometown Minnesota Wild team.

In the seventh round of the 1981 Montreal Canadiens NHL draft, Kufus played for the Habs, Buffalo Pai Knives, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, and Anaheim. The Almighty Ducks played 659 games in 11 seasons, scored 93 goals, and contributed 328 assists.

Kufus made his NHL debut with the Habs in 1984 and subsequently won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1986. Prior to his professional debut, Kufus spent four years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, winning the Hobby Baker Award as a Top varsity player in 1984 and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1991.

After his career ended in 1995, he joined the Phoenix Coyotes and served as an assistant coach under former Habs teammate Bobby Smith. After a season on the bench, he switched to a scouting role and was finally promoted to director of player personnel in 2005.

Kurvers joined the Tampa Bay Chargers as an assistant general manager in 2008 and then moved to the wild in 2018.
