A tragedy marked French rugby this weekend. Kelly Meafua, a Montauban player, died at dawn from Friday to Saturday after jumping off a bridge over the Tarn River in the club’s eponymous city. The Samoan athlete was 32 years old.

The incident took place after the team’s victory over Narbonne, in a game valid for the second division of the French Championship. According to the French press, Meafua jumped off the bridge after leaving a nightclub where he celebrated the triumph with teammates.

Christopher Vaotoa, also a Montauban player who was at the scene, entered the river to try to save him. But he was unsuccessful and still needed to be taken to the hospital with hypothermia. According to a statement issued by the club, the athlete is doing well.

The 32-year-old crashed into the Tarn early in the morning and did not survive. One of his companions tried to rescue him, without success. Transported to hospital for hypothermia, he was discharged this morning in good health. All training is suspended until further notice.
