Jean Potvin Died: What Was His Cause Of Death?

Jean Potvin, two-time Stanley Cup champion, is no longer.

Former National Hockey League (NHL) defenseman Jean Potvin died on Tuesday.

The New York Islanders organization, with whom he won two Stanley Cups, announced a press release. Potvin was 72 years old. 

A member of the “Isles” for eight seasons, the Ottawa native lifted the Lord Stanley trophy in 1980 and 1981. He played 613 games in the NHL, amassing 287 points.

Potvin also played with the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Cleveland Barons, and Minnesota North Stars.

Jean was a leader on the ice and helped our organization win two championships,” Islanders President and GM Lou Lamoriello said. He made [Long Island] his home and was always a familiar face in the community.”

After his hockey career, Potvin worked as a radio analyst for Islanders games during the 1980s.  He also played for the Kings and Minnesota North Stars.

Jean Potvin, died on Tuesday 15 March 2022. He was 72 years old, cause of death unrelated to COVID-19.

Jean ended his career with 63 goals, 224 assists, and 478 penalty minutes. He played 613 games in his career. He did two goals and nine assists in 39 playoff games.

Stan Fischler, Emmy award-winning journalist remembers Potvin as a fine defenseman.

“Let it not be forgotten that the @NYIslanders #JeanPotvin was a fine defenseman. He had a very underrated offensive touch and was solid in his zone. He was crucial in the development of the early playoff teams and the creation of the Dynasty. He will be sadly missed by all.”

Potvin lived a better life with Lorraine, his wife, and three children – Kim, Leslie, and Justin on Long Island. They had two grandchildren.
