The Portuguese Golf Federation today regretted the death of young golfer Tiago Sousa, a victim of a road accident in the United States, which caused the death of seven members of the Southwest University golf team.

The 18-year-old Portuguese amateur was returning from a tournament in the early hours of Tuesday, when the van carrying the team had an accident in Andrews County, killing six players, the coach, and the two occupants of the other car involved in the incident.

“It was with deep sadness that the Portuguese Golf Federation became aware of the tragic car accident, which, last Tuesday night, killed seven members of the North American golf team at the University of Southwest, in New Mexico, among them the young Portuguese Tiago Sousa”, the statement said.

Tiago Sousa was a player at the Quinta do Lago Association, in the Algarve, and in the last year, he entered the first year of his university course in the United States, where he combined his studies with golf.

“I had the privilege of playing with Tiago in the Absolute National Championship, in 2020, at Oporto Golf Club, and I remember a young man with a lot of talent, but, above all, with a very pleasant personality and behavior, on and off the field. , irreproachable. I send a heartfelt hug to Tiago’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time for everyone”, stressed Miguel Franco de Sousa, president of the Portuguese Golf Federation.

The Portuguese Golf Federation, in the face of the tragic accident, decreed a minute of silence at the beginning of all competitions next weekend, especially on Circuit Drive, which the young golfer played several times.
