Frank Williams Died

The Williams Race announced this Sunday morning, the death of Frank Williams, aged 79. Entrepreneur and head of the Grove team, the Englishman was considered a Formula 1 legend, as he lived for the sport, not by chance he completed his 50th birthday in 2019 exercising the position of leadership in the category.

“It is with great sadness that on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, founder, and former team chief of Williams Racing, at the age of 79”, published the team on its social networks.

With nine constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ titles, one of them conquered by the Brazilian Nelson Piquet, in 1987, the team founded by the Briton made history in Formula 1. He and his family were in charge of Williams until August this year when the team was sold to the investment group Dorilton Capital.

His daughter Claire worked as a family representative and led the team on a day-to-day basis since 2013. She was later named deputy’s head, but the title of the head has always remained with Sir Frank, who has been facing health problems since 2016, the year he was hospitalized because of pneumonia. Since then, he has stopped traveling to racing.

“He was a true giant of our sport who overcame life’s most difficult challenges and struggled every day to win on and off the track. We have lost a very dear and respected member of the F1 family and we will miss him very much. Your incredible achievements and personality will be engraved in our sport forever. My feelings are with all the family and friends of Williams at this sad time”, lamented Stefano Domenicali, President, and CEO of Formula 1.

Before founding the team, Frank Williams was a pilot and mechanic. Already acting as a boss, in 1986, he became quadriplegic after suffering a car accident on a dangerous road in Marseille, France. At the time, I was coming out of a test run by Nelson Piquet with a new model.

In addition to Piquet, champion of the team in 1987, Williams has a history full of Brazilians. Ayrton Senna (1994), Antonio Pizzonia (2004 to 2005), Rubens Barrichello (2010 to 2011), Bruno Senna (2012) and Felipe Massa (2014 to 2017) were also team drivers.
