Singer Manuel Martinez Dies At The Age Of 66

Singer Manuel “Mannix” Martínez, who had many successes in salsa with La Terrífica and La Sonora Ponceña, died today in Chicago, United States, his family reported. He was 66 years old.

Providencia Lourdes Rodríguez, the singer’s niece, confirmed on the social network Facebook that Martínez, a native of Ponce, died this morning.

“Today is a very sad day for the Curet, Martínez, and Roldán families. Today my uncle Cano, known as Mannix Martínez, salsa singer,… left with our lord, leaving his wife Yvonne and their three children Ismanuel, Johnathan, and Jeffrey. I want to ask for prayers for them and our entire family. We will always remember you man for the music that never goes away and for your jokes. You will always be in our heart and soul. May he rest in peace, ”Rodríguez wrote.

Martínez is well remembered for his years with La Terrífica, an orchestra with which he achieved great successes such as “Pura”, “Casa poor, casa grande”, “Solitude is finished” and “Song of the poor”, among others.

When he left La Terrífica he joined the Freddy Kenton orchestra of merenguero and then went on to Sonora Ponceña.

With the Ponceña, an orchestra he joined in 1983, he had hits such as “Canción” (also known as “De qué quiet way”), “I keep thinking about you”, “When I found you”, “Like lovers” and “Si sometime ”, among others.

In 2008 he published his only solo production entitled “Here I am”, of which the song “You are not from him” was heard on the radio.

Martínez joins the group of salsa figures who have passed away this year, considered a very tough year for salsa due to a large number of deaths.
