Former Senator Jovino Novoa Dies At 76

This June 1, the Chilean politician Jovino Novoa, founder of the UDI and participant in the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, passed away.

Jovino Novoa, former senator and historical president of the UDI, died during the early hours of this Tuesday at the age of 76.

The right-wing politician was the founder of the UDI and a senator between 1998 and 2014. For now, there is no clarity about the reasons for his death, although he suffered from health problems for years.

Before being part of the Chamber, Novoa was part of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, where he participated in his government as an undersecretary of the interior, between 1979 and 1982. 

In addition, Novoa became one of the politicians who was convicted after convicted of irregular campaign financing within the Penta Case. In this case, he received three years of minor imprisonment, which he had to carry out in freedom.
