Will Patterson, a fresh graduate of Lee County High School and a former quarterback for the Yellow Jackets, was killed in an automobile accident over the weekend of November 5, 2022, as per on various sources. Over the weekend, Patterson was not supposed to travel with his football squad and instead returned home. As per WSLS, he perished in a collision in Lee County.
Known for his cheery smile and his leadership abilities “on and off the field,” Will Patterson, an 18-year-old college football player, was well-liked by his teammates.
His small Virginia college, where he was a freshman and the Panthers’ “up-and-coming quarterback,” was devastated by Patterson’s passing, according to the institution and an online obituary. Ferrum College posted on Facebook, “We express our sincere sympathies to Will’s family, friends, and teammates.”
Patterson, better known as “Willie P,” is recognized as a valued student and a “leader on and off the field” in online tributes. He was a multi-sport athlete who treated his coaches and teammates like members of his own family.
A “Willie P Football Scholarship” has reportedly been established in his honor. Donations can be sent to the Lee County High School Booster Club at PO Box 2421, Sanford, North Carolina, 27331, and designated for the “Willie P Scholarship.”
He played baseball and football while attending Lee County Senior High School, where he recently graduated with academic and athletic awards.
He participated in sports outside of school, including travel baseball for many neighborhood teams and employment at Carolina Trace Country Club, where he made friends and fell in love with golf, according to the obituary.
During his four years of football participation, Patterson started 13 games as a senior and nine games as a junior. He threw for 4,227 yards in his whole career, 44 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions. In final two seasons, Lee County had a 17-5 record.
