Pervez Musharraf’s Cause Of Death
The retired general’s family announced last June the admission of the Pakistani leader to the American Hospital in Dubai due to a worsening of the amyloidosis he suffered from, a rare disease that occurs when an abnormal protein accumulates in the organs and interferes with the functions body normal.
After the family confirmation, the Pakistani Army communicated its “sincere condolences” for the death, as was also transferred by the President of Pakistan, Arif Alvi, who prayed “for the eternal rest of the soul of the deceased and the courage of the grieving family to bear this loss.”
Musharraf came to power in 1999 after a coup against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Two years later, he would become a key ally of the United States after the attacks of September 11 during a term characterized in large part by his practices of oppression and abuses of Human Rights.
This totalitarian drift increased, especially during the last years of his mandate. In 2007 he suspended the Constitution, imposed martial law, removed the chief justice, and arrested activists and lawyers, sparking mass protests across the country.
Musharraf resigned in 2008, after which he traveled to Dubai and London in self-imposed exile for four years. In March 2012, Musharraf returned to the country with the aim of leading his party in the legislative elections, but a court disqualified him from the electoral race and he was exposed to a battery of charges against him for his actions while in power.
In 2019, Musharraf was found guilty of treason for suspending the Constitution and imposing a state of emergency in 2007.
