Virginia Tech Men’s Tennis sadly lost Martin Christopher Sayer, a renowned Hong Kong tennis player and devoted assistant coach for many years.
On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, he tragically passed suddenly, leaving his loved ones—family, friends, and others—devastated and inconsolable.
The causes of his death and the factors that caused it were not made public. The family will shortly share details about the obituary so his loved ones can participate in his final rites.
Everyone, including friends and relatives, paid respect to and expressed sorrow for the talented Martin Sayer.

About Martin Sayer:
The parents of Sayer are from England. Before Sayer was born, they had relocated to Hong Kong since Sayer’s father was offered an engineering position there. At the time, Hong Kong was still a British colony.
After ex-Radford head coach Mike Anderson emailed a coach in Hong Kong, Sayer was awarded a full scholarship to Radford University to help them find recruits.
Sayer, a blond youth with a British accent but a Hong Kong native nonetheless, was suggested by that coach. At the time, Sayer was regarded as one of the best players in Hong Kong.
When Sayer was a senior at Radford in 2009, he chuckled to himself as he told The Roanoke Times, “Hong Kong is not the biggest country in the world, so there are only about 10 players who can play tennis at a decent level.” There are numerous tennis courts, but no one is very skilled. I could be the finest.
During Sayer’s four years at Radford, he reached the annual NCAA singles finals. In two of those four NCAA tournament appearances, he won his first-round match.
He was one of just two players overall and the only member of the Big South to win in straight sets at the NCAA singles event.
