The legendary coach, powerlifter, and founder of Westside Barbell, the man who was credited as the mastermind behind the training has been passed away at the age of 74.

We don’t know the exact cause of his death, but few reports state that Simmons had been battling kidney issues and other health problems in recent times.

Westside Barbell announced his passing away news on their official Instagram page on 24th March 2022. He is considered the Godfather of powerlifting.

“‘It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Louie Simmon; the post says. Louie Simmons was born on 12th October 1947. At an early age, he felt his passion for weight training. However, he entered the world of powerlifting in his teenage. Simmons was famous for his Westside Barbell Gym. The gym was located in Columbus. However, he invented two machines; reverse hyper and belt squat. Along with that, he contributed to the conjugate training method. It is also known as the Westside Barbell Conjugate Method. It helps to popularize the usage of resistance bands and chains.

He was a famous athlete. According to Open Powerlifting, he took part in the competition from 1979 until 2012. He almost completed on equipped powerlifting.

In the year 2019, the documentary Westside vs. The World was released. This film, Simmons’ myriad extraordinary contributions to promote and strengthen sport. This documentary is also available on Amazon Prime.
