“I learned this morning that Linda Pastan has died. Such a gentle and astute person whose beautiful poems are more whispered than shouted, subtle than vehement, and restrained than strained. I first met Linda at Bread Loaf in 1982, my first time there. I was 27 and had the scholarship to attend; she was my first workshop teacher. We became friends and stayed in touch all these years, and she often contributed poems to The Kenyon Review, where I eventually became Poetry Editor. Thank you, Linda, for your poetry’s kindness, strength, and gift. As this gorgeous poem says, from the first book of yours I ever read, “falling in silence / towards silence.”

Linda Pastan was born on May 27, 1932. She served as Maryland’s Poet Laureate from 1991 to 1995. She was renowned for penning brief poems on various subjects, including the fragility of life and interpersonal connections, domesticity, motherhood, the female experience, aging, death, loss, and the fear of loss. Insomnia, Traveling Light, and A Dog Run Through It are some of her most recent poetry books.

She wrote 15 books of poetry and also wrote a number of articles. Two of her collections were nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and National Book Award. The 1986 Maurice English Poetry Award was given to her for her book “A fraction of Darkness”.

Amelia Warner writes all the Latest Articles. She mostly covers Entertainment topics, but at times loves to write about movie reviews as well.
