She died of “multiple organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalization for complications from Covid,” said Dr. Pratit Samdani of Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital.

“The kind and affectionate Lata Didi has left us,” wrote the prime minister, using a term of endearment for her older sister. “Lata leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. Generations to come will remember her as a believer in Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unrivaled ability to mesmerize people.”
The singer will receive a state funeral and the government will observe mourning with the flag at half-mast until Monday, the Interior Ministry said.
Born in 1929 in pre-independence India, Mangeshkar began singing in her teens and, in a career spanning 73 years, has sung over 15,000 songs in 36 languages.
She enchanted Indians with her melodious voice and range, singing everything from patriotic to romantic songs in both films and albums.
