Kentaro Miura Died: How Did Japanese Manga Artist Die?

He died on May 6, a victim of an aortic dissection

Manga artist Kentaro Miura, known among other things for being the author of Berserk, has died at the age of 54, the team of the Young Animal manga magazine announced this Thursday, which had published its medieval fantasy work for more than 30 years.

Kentaro Miura “died on May 6, a victim of an aortic dissection,” this magazine from the Japanese publishing house Hakusensha announced on Twitter, expressing its condolences and also its “immense respect” and “gratitude.”

Anchored in a universe called “dark fantasy” with a dark and apocalyptic atmosphere, Berserk, first published in 1989, tells the story of Guts, a lone warrior hunted by dark forces who seek to avenge his former master.

Published by chapters in Young Animal magazine, Berserk also became a 40-volume manga comic, of which more than 50 million copies have been sold in 15 countries.

This work, still unfinished, had also been adapted to an animated series, a novel, various animated films in the cinema, or even video games.

With its graphic violence and highly detailed design, Berserk has strongly influenced other cultural productions, such as the Japanese video game series Souls ( Demon’s SoulsDark Souls …).

Kentaro Miura was honored in 2002 by Berserk in the Award of Excellence category of the prestigious Japanese Osamu Tezuka cultural award.
