On 15 November, a very well-known Singaporean missionary named Joseph Chean, who was 56 years old, unexpectedly passed away in a severe traffic accident.
The incident happened when Joseph was on his way towards the airport as he was heading to Turkey. Exactly the incident occurred on the Northern Marmara Highway at about 10.20 am.
On Thursday, the place where Joseph was a dedicated worker was named Youth With A Mission (YWAM), which is located in Singapore; in this organization, Joseph served 12 years of his life with all passion and compassion. This organization announced the death news. Not just this, but YWAM also reached out to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Singapore to shed more light on the details of the incident which took Joseph’s life.
How did a Traffic Accident happen?
According to the initial reports, the exact cause of death of Joseph Chean is reported as an accident. He lost his life on the spot when his car crashed into another vehicle which was behind the taxi. Due to this severe car crash, both the drivers of the vehicles got severe injuries, and along with taking Joseph Chean, they were rushed to the Arnavutkoy State Hospital. Due to having severe fatal injuries, he could not survive and lost his life. Although the case is not shut, the investigation is ongoing; officials are looking into the matter as per Turkish media report.

With great sadness, we received the tragic news this morning that our beloved Joseph Chean has gone home to be with the Lord. Joe was involved in a road traffic accident at 10:20 am Istanbul time on 15 November 2023 on the way to the airport back to Singapore and died from injuries en route to the hospital. He was on a teaching trip.
We are in shock and grief at this moment, and together with his wife, Kim, and two daughters, Olivia and Ashley, we are mourning the loss of a very dear spiritual father, leader, mentor, brother and friend.
We seek your prayers for the family and understanding as we handle condolences. To honour the family, we ask that you give them privacy to grieve and settle necessary matters. More details will be released soon.
The family has not announced details regarding the funeral arrangements and memorial service for Joseph Chean for now.
Joseph Dedicated life
Joseph Chean was a beloved member of his community. He was the one people used to get influenced by. He impacted the people around him; after working for almost eight years as a youth pastor in an Anglican church, he joined YWAM in 1997. Recently, he was working as a strategic coordinator for Antioch 21. As Joseph belonged to a Christian community, he was on board a particular project of sending people from Singapore to other countries to spread the word of Christianity.
