Clayton Ruby, a well-known criminal lawyer in Canada, died at 80. The native of Toronto passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon in his family’s company. He is believed to have passed away of natural causes on August 2, 2022.
Ruby, who was born on February 6, 1942, earned a law degree from the University of Toronto in 1967 and was admitted to the Ontario bar in 1969. In the 1970s, he received his law degree from the University of California (Berkeley), a former hotbed of alternative thought. Ruby ran a professional career in Toronto for over 50 years, specializing in criminal, constitutional, and administrative law. He appeared more than 50 times just before the Supreme Court of Canada. Ruby was married to Superior Court Justice Harriet Sachs. Their two daughters are Emma and Kate.
On the Governor General’s website, Ruby is described as “a prominent criminal lawyer whose reputation extends across the country who devoted his career to the promotion of justice.” Ruby was involved in a conflict-of-interest case in Toronto that sought to remove then-mayor Rob Ford from office.
“Clay was a dedicated human rights advocate, a champion of the underdog, and a caring friend. “Our sentiments are with his family, and our firm mourns the loss of our leader and mentor.” The company stated in a tweet. Others in the legal, political, and advocacy communities have also expressed condolences and praised Ruby’s long legacy.
He has dedicated his professional career to ensuring that those who face discrimination or are disadvantaged have equal access to our legal system, Dying with Dignity Canada wrote on its website. Ruby represented former MP Svend Robinson, who was present at Sue Rodriguez’s illegally medically assisted death in 1994. Robinson was not charged in the end. Ruby was involved in some of Ontario’s most high-profile criminal cases during the 1980s and 1990s.
