Charlie Thomas, a senior member of The Drifters, passed away on January 31, 2023. He was a part of one of the most recognizable R&B groups of all time. He battled hepatocarcinoma until the age of 85, when he passed away.

The late great Ben E. King was a member of the vocal band The Five Crowns that Thomas led until tragedy stepped in. When The Drifters broke up in 1958 due to internal conflict, group leader George Treadwell enlisted The Five Crowns to take their place as the new Drifters.
This group’s performance of “There Goes My Baby” was their first collaboration with famed songwriters and producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They then went on to have a streak of top 10 successes, including “Save The Last Dance For Me” and “This Magic Moment.” On a couple of the group’s charters throughout the ensuing years, such as “When My Little Girl Is Smiling” and “Sweets For My Sweet,” Thomas took his fair amount of leads.
Thomas stayed with the band until 1967, a reasonable period for a group noted for its frequent lineup changes. A few years later, he joined a new edition of the group and became entangled in a protracted legal battle over the ownership of the group name.
Later, Thomas created Charlie Thomas’ Drifters, his take on the group, and performed in multi-artist nostalgia events worldwide for 20 years before falling ill a few years ago. Along with many other former members of The Drifters, Thomas was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
