Cause of Death and Funeral
The Athens Highway Patrol Post received word of the collision on September 20, 2023, at around 5:02 PM. At 5:13 PM, troopers responded and arrived on the site. During the inquiry, it was found that a 2016 Audi Q5 driven by Grove City, Ohio resident Caitlyn Laughlin was moving eastward on U.S. 33. On U.S. 33.
John Ashley was driving a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia towing a 2016 Wabash Trailer out of Winchester, Tennessee. The Audi lost control and veered into the grass median on the left side of the eastbound lanes. The Freightliner was struck directly by the Audi as it entered the westbound lanes of traffic.
At the time of the collision, belts were worn by both parties. Hocking County Coroner’s Office declared Caitlyn Laughlin dead at the scene. John Ashley created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Caitlyn’s funeral and wrote in his GoFundMe statement that: “there were no wounds. And the funeral will take place in Schoedinger Grove. The estimated cost of the funeral is $8,000.
