Actress Anne Heche died at the age of 53, a week after suffering a serious car accident in Los Angeles. The family confirmed the actress was brain dead but said she was being kept on life support while it was evaluated whether her organs could be donated. Under California law, when there is no more brain function, a person is considered dead.

She was in a coma from “severe anoxic brain injury” and was pronounced brain dead earlier in the day.

According to TMZ, she was driving a vehicle that crashed into the garage of an apartment complex at high speed. Afterward, the actress continued to accelerate the car on a residential street and ended up colliding with a house and causing a fire.

On Thursday (11), the Los Angeles police declared that they would do a blood test on the artist. Several media outlets said that preliminary analyzes had revealed the presence of drugs.

“We have lost a bright light, a kind and joyful soul, a loving mother, & a loyal friend. Anne Heche will be sorely missed but she lives on through her beautiful children, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in your truth, spreading your message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact,” the family’s statement read.

On Thursday, 11, in another statement, the family even said that it was their wish to donate her organs and that she would be kept connected to machines while they saw if that would be possible because of the damage suffered in the accident.

The news of Anne Heche’s death was already expected by people close to the actress. Anne Heche suffered burns and severe lung and brain injuries. The American press said they would have found cocaine and fentanyl in blood samples from the actress.

Anne Heche began her career in the late 1980s, shortly after leaving school. She was revealed when she played one of the twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love in the soap opera Another World. Her performance won her the Daytime Emmy Award, among other awards.
