Dominican Fray Javier Zugasti Landa Dies Of Covid In Oaxaca

OAXACA, Oax. April 2, 2021.- Dominican Fray Francisco Javier Zugasti Landa died a victim of Covid this Thursday, April 1 in Oaxaca.

The Order of Preachers Province of Santiago de México confirmed the news of the death, which occurred together with that of Mrs.

Olga Solís, who collaborated as the friars’ cook. The space attached to the Santo Domingo de Guzmán temple is closed while the quarantine provided by the health authorities is fulfilled.

Inside the temple, there is no disinfection process since the care required by the protected historical objects requires the intervention of specialists.

The contagion by Covid 19 affected three other priests who are members of the Dominican order: Alejandro Latapí Díaz, José María Castro and the prior of the order, José Luis Martínez.

Appreciated by the Oaxacan community, Fray Javier Zugasti was born on October 1, 1941, in Viadaurre Spain; On the same date, but in 1959, he received his first priestly vows and his ordination was on July 7, 1966.

In Oaxaca he participated in the process of rehabilitation of the temple and other spaces, a fact that the INAH recognized him through an obituary.

The Archdiocese of Antequera also shared its sorrow for the loss of the Dominican friar.

In his message of condolence, he expressed his sorrow for the death of the priest Fray Francisco, one more loss in this pandemic for the institution of the Eucharist and the Priesthood, and wished the community of Dominican Brothers that the Lord strengthen them.
