Vangelis Died: What Was His Cause Of Death?

The musician’s lawyers have spread the news through a statement, but have not disclosed the causes of death.

Greek composer Vangelis, best known for composing the soundtrack for the film ‘Chariots of Fire’, has died at the age of 79, the Athens News Agency has reported.

The death would have occurred late on Tuesday, according to a statement shared by the musician’s lawyers. However, in this message, the causes of death have not been specified.

Evangelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, as Vangelis was actually called, stood out as a composer when he won the Oscar for Best Soundtrack in 1981, thanks to the scores of the aforementioned ‘Chariots of Fire’.

The song reached number one on the US charts and the album became a commercial success, one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time.

After this success, the Greek composed the melody for other important productions such as ‘ Blade Runner ‘, ‘1492: The Conquest of Paradise’ or ‘Alexander the Great’ and, after more than 50 years of career, Vangelis continued composing. In fact, just a week ago his latest single was released.

Career

His career began in the 1960s, with progressive psychedelic rock classics, but it was the soundtracks he composed from the 1980s, some of the most influential of the 20th century, that brought him his greatest recognition.

With barely twenty soundtracks, his influence on the history of film music has been decisive, since it was he who popularized the synthesizer.

However, Vangelis always leaned towards musical projects outside the cinema. Thus, his music resonated even in space, since NASA asked him for a theme for an unmanned mission in 2001.

With 50 albums on the market, Vangelis has been one of the most avant-garde composers of his time since his beginnings.
