Tommy DeBarge, of the R&B group Switch, died at age 64. The information was confirmed by DeBarge’s sister, Etterlene”Bunny” DeBarge, who shared the news on Facebook on Thursday (21).
“Tommy has gained wings,” she wrote in the caption of a photo of the artist. In another publication, she wrote: “Rest in peace in heaven, dear Thomas DeBarge.”
A member of the musician’s family revealed to TMZ that he had suffered from liver and kidney failure over the years and had recently taken a turn for the worse.
DeBarge and his bandmates rose to fame in the 1970s with hits such as “There’ll Never Be”, “I Call Your Name” and “Love Over & Over Again”. The singer and his brother Bobby founded the group, which had an impressive influence on R&B bands in the following years, including the group DeBarge, which consisted of members of the star’s family.
Tommy and Bobby left Switch to manage their family in DeBarge, which became known for hits such as “I Like It”, “Time Will Reveal” and “A Dream”.
The switch was created in 1976 by Gregory Williams, Phillip Ingram, Eddie Fluellen, and Jody Sims. They signed on to a subsidiary of iconic record label Motown shortly after they formed.
