Thich Nhat Hanh Death

One of the most influential Buddhist monks in the world, Thich Nhat Hanh, died this Saturday in Vietnam at the age of 95, announced the organization Plum Village, which manages temples based on his teachings worldwide. The master “passed away peacefully” at the Tu Hieu temple in the city of Hue, the heart of Vietnamese Zen Buddhism, Plum Village told Twitter, quoted by news agencies France-Presse, Associated Press, and EFE.

“We invite our beloved global spiritual family to take a few moments to be at peace,” said the organization of the man who returned to live in his native Vietnam in 2018 after nearly 40 years in exile in the United States and France.

Thich Nhat Hanh helped spread the practice of consciousness in the West, notably with TV star Oprah Winfey and actress Gwyneth Paltrow, both Americans and socially engaged Buddhism in the East.

He was also influential with many heads of the Silicon Valley tech industry, including the giant Google, where he was invited to share his teachings.

Thich Nhat Hanh is considered one of the most committed figures in Buddhism along with the current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, who once mourned the death of his “friend and spiritual brother”.

“In their peaceful opposition to the Vietnam War, in their support of Martin Luther King, and most of all in their dedication to sharing with others not only how caring and compassion contribute to inner peace, but also how individuals who cultivate peace of mind contribute to genuine world peace, the Venerable lived a truly meaningful life,” said the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, quoted by the AP.

Writer, poet, pacifist, and human rights defender, Thich Nhat Hanh was opposed to the Vietnam War (1955-1975), for which he was exiled.

Meeting with Martin Luther King
He began to gain international notoriety in 1966 when he met in the United States with Martin Luther King, who a year later nominated him as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I know of no one more deserving than this gentle Vietnamese monk. His ideas for peace, if implemented, would be a monument to ecumenism, to universal brotherhood, to humanity,” proclaimed the American civil rights leader, assassinated in 1968.

Vetoed by the pro-US government of South Vietnam, he could not return to his homeland during the war and was also denied entry by the regime in force since the victory of the communist North in 1975.

In 1982, he moved to the monastery of Plum Village, which he founded in the south of France and where he lived until moving to Thailand in 2016, about two years after he suffered a stroke.

Two years later, he moved to the Tu Hieu Pagoda, near the Vietnamese city of Hue, the place where he became a monk in 1942, aged 16, and where he died today.
