The singer Mary Wilson, founder of the trio The Supremes along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, died at the age of 76 at her home in Henderson, in the US state of Nevada.
The death of the singer was confirmed by her representative, who did not specify the reasons for the death, according to the BBC.
Together with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson formed one of the most successful and influential female groups in modern music, with which they conquered the charts of the sixties around the world with songs like “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “Stop! In the name of love ”and“ Baby Love ”.
Originally from Detroit, The Supremes became the most successful group on the Motown record label, with which they achieved up to twelve number one on the North American charts.
Following the departure of Diana Ross from the group, Mary Wilson remained a member of The Supremes until its final dissolution in 1977.
Two days ago, Wilson posted a video on his YouTube channel announcing that he was working on releasing new, unreleased material with Universal Music. “Hopefully some of it will come out on my birthday, March 6,” he says in the video.
The group’s first number one selling song, Where did our love go, was released on June 17, 1964.
On tour at the time, Wilson said there was a time when she realized they had a hit song. “I remember instead of going home by bus, we flew,” she told The Associated Press in 2014. “That was our first plane trip. We fly home. We had really achieved great success. ”
