Joanna Barnes Cause of Death

The actress and writer Joanna Barnes, perhaps best known to the general public for her performances in two different versions of Operation Cupid (1961 and 1998), died yesterday (29) at the age of 87. The news was confirmed to THR by friend Sally Jackson, citing only “multiple health issues” as the cause of death.

In the sixties version of Operação Cupido, also known in Brazil by the title O Grande Amor de Nossas Vidas, she played the gold digger who tries to win over the father of the twins played by Haley Mills. Already in 1998, in the remake starring Lindsay Lohan, she was the mother of this same character, then played by Elaine Hendrix.

In addition to the two versions of the Disney classic, Barnes was known for her role as Gloria in Woman of the Century (1958), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. Soon after, she was Denny Miller’s Tarzan Jane in Tarzan, Son of the Wild (1959).

The actress also appeared in titles such as Spartacus (1960) and Fighting Giants (1967), alongside stars such as Kirk Douglas and John Wayne. When film work became rare, she turned to TV, where she was welcomed in series such as Maverick, The Buscapé Family, Hawaii Five-O, Fantasy Island, Charlie’s Angels, and Murder in Writing.

In the 70s and 80s, she still reinvented herself as a writer, releasing several books that were well received by critics. The Deceivers, which tells the story of a young actress disillusioned by Hollywood; and Pastora, a historical epic about the California gold rush, stand out in the bibliography.

Barnes was married three times, including to director, actor, and screenwriter Lawrence Dobkin between 1961 and 1967. She never had children but leaves three stepdaughters and two sisters.
