Actor Tim Considine, one of Disney’s most popular child stars in the 1950s, died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles at age 81.
Son of John W. Considine Jr. producer of successful films such as “With Open Arms” (1938) and “Young Thomas Edison” (1940), and younger brother of fellow actor John Considine (“The Blue Cadillac” ), Tim began his Hollywood career at age 11, playing the son of comedian Red Skelton in “The Clown” (1953).
After small roles in other films and series, he amended three Mickey Mouse Club television shows, “The Adventures of Spin and Marty” (1955), “The Hardy Boys” (1956-57), and “Annette” (1958), alongside Annette Funicello. And he culminated his career at Disney with a great cinematic success: “The Shaggy Dog”, a 1959 children’s production starring Fred MacMurray that started a franchise.
But despite the film’s popularity, he remained on TV, going on to star in his best-known role: Mike Douglas, the eldest son of “My Three Sons.”
In the 1960s series, he returned to work with MacMurray, who had the lead role as the widowed father of three boys. But after five seasons, the young man decided to leave the attraction. His character got married in the plot and went on to live his own life, while the production went on, lasting a total of 12 years!
The adult actor’s life, however, was not what Considine had expected. Despite his many appearances in 1960s series episodes, his only prominent role after “My 3 Kids” was a very brief, if important, appearance in the movie “Patton.” He enacted the most memorable scene in the 1971 Oscar-winning feature, as the “in shock” soldier slapped in the face by the titular general, played by George C. Scott.
Considine eventually retired from acting in the following decades, devoting himself to writing books on photography, sports and automobiles.
Even distant, he was not forgotten by Disney, which in 2000 invited him to participate in a television remake of “The Adventures of Spin and Marty”, called “The New Adventures of Spin and Marty”, in the role of the mayor of the city.
